Calligraphy Design
Corinna Tai
Corinna Tai is a veteran Chinese Calligraphy artist, designer, and educator. Her journey into calligraphy began at the age of 9, profoundly influenced by her grandfather. She immersed herself in a decade of traditional calligraphy training, cultivating a deep-seated passion for the beauty of the written word.
Throughout the years that she was involved in environmental design as a profession, she gained a deeper appreciation and perspective for aesthetics. This experience led her to innovate from traditional calligraphy, merging it with Singapore's modern context and culture. Leveraging on her professional insights and experience, she aims to present this classical art in a vibrant and avant garde manner.
In 2019, Corinna founded TAIS Calligraphy Design, a creative business specialising in Chinese calligraphy named in homage for her surname "Tai", reflecting the familial influence and her unique vision. It offers a variety of services, including the customisation of physical and digital artworks, private events, and foundational calligraphy workshops and classes that highlight the beauty of traditional calligraphy with a modern spin.
Corinna Tai's philosophy in Chinese calligraphy emphasises bridging traditional techniques with personal creativity. She focuses on regular script (楷书) and semi-cursive script (行书), which are fundamental to mastering Chinese calligraphy. Her approach is deeply rooted in the belief that practicing calligraphy is not merely a visual art form, but also a therapeutic activity that can have a profound impact on one's life.
Her collaborations with notable international brands include Valentino, Dior, Emporio Armani, Moleskine, Nissan, and Asahi; as well as prominent hospitality brands such as Resorts World Sentosa, The Clan Hotel, Amoy Hotel, and Millenia Walk. She has conducted over 20 workshops, teaching nearly 80 students varying from 6 to 80 years of age. Corinna has also been invited by esteemed Singapore educational institutions to host both online and offline calligraphy workshops, including the National University of Singapore, Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore American School, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Through her work, Corinna provides an opportunity for participants to engage with Chinese culture and art, aiming to make this classic discipline and art form accessible and enjoyable to all, regardless of heritage and cultural backgrounds.
